Up until about mid-August, the main equity markets had been rising, giving investors a brief ray of sunshine throughout the summer. There were a number of presumptions that helped fuel this trend, including that inflation had peaked and was beginning to decline, that GDP was on a soft landing trajectory, and that central banks had accomplished most of their goals.
